Alfredo Zayas y Alfonso was a Cuban politician and lawyer who served as the president of the Cuban Republic from 1920 to 1921. He was born in Havana, Cuba in 1861 and studied law at the University of Havana. He began his political career as a member of the Liberal Party and was elected to the Cuban House of Representatives in 1906. Zayas was a proponent of Cuban independence and played an important role in the negotiations with the United States that led to the withdrawal of American troops from Cuba in 1909. As president, he focused on economic development and improving Cuba's relations with the United States. Zayas died in Havana in 1934.
